Oh Say Can You Tee(Shirt)?

Just own the night, like the 4th of July – it’s America’s Independence Day! As Americans enjoy their Monday off (as written by an Englishman who’s totally not bitter about being in the office…), let’s look at some of our US-themed favourites in store…   The Only Boss I Listen To – Bruce Springsteen The man Born In The USA, and the man behind many a Presidential candidates’ poor choice of theme song. Born To Lose… He Lived To Win: Lemmy Kilmister (1945-2015)

On Christmas Eve, he celebrated his 70th birthday. On Boxing Day, he learned he had extremely aggressive cancer. Yesterday, the rock icon sadly passed away. It was a whirlwind final few days for the Motorhead lead singer. Today though, many fans across the world will mourn the passing of Ian Fraser Kilmister. Unsure of how he actually gained the nickname of Lemmy, it was claimed it came from the phrase “lend me a quid ’til Friday” (the “lend me” part being slurred to say “Lemmy”) – due to a habit... Some Stupid with a Flare Gun…

The second you hear the riff, you know you love the track. You get the air guitars out. No matter how bad you sound doing it, you sing it too. Ba-ba-baa-ba-ba-babaa, ba-ba-baa-ba-baaaaa… So the inspiration behind Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water” is well-known – heck, the giveaway is in the song lyrics (and this blog title) – “some stupid with a flare gun burned the place to the ground”. It tells the story of Switzerland’s Montreux Casino being set on fire during a Frank Zappa gig, which took place... Read More

Is This The Real Life? Behind the third best selling single in UK history…

On this day 40 years ago, 5 minutes and 55 seconds of one of the most popular songs of all time became the UK number one single. Today, it is the third biggest selling single of all-time in this country. That is, of course, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Written by Freddie Mercury on his own (take that, modern day pop artists), the song consists of multiple sections: The opening, ballad, guitar solo, opera, hard rock and the closing. It was unlike anything before – and quite frankly – any attempts to replicate anything... Read More

The Vinyl Resurgence: New Weekly Chart Arrives on Week of Record Store Day 2015

To say “Vinyl is coming back” would be slightly incorrect – the resurgence really began about 7 years ago – but now, more than ever, the return is the strongest it’s been for a long, long time. Over the past 20 years with the improvements in digital technology, CD’s and then MP3’s became the major way to obtain music, with downloads being recognised by the Official Charts Company in 2004. As a result, sales of vinyls declined – eventually hitting a low in 2007 of just 205,292 LP sales; a... Read More
