Happy Birthday Kurt Cobain: On His 57th

One of the most iconic stars in the rock genre would’ve celebrated his 57th birthday today – Kurt Cobain.

Born 20th February 1967 in Aberdeen, Washington, Cobain would grow up to become a founding member and lead singer of Grunge band Nirvana (which would go on to also feature a young Dave Grohl on the drums!). With an anti-establishment sound, Kurt was considered somewhat a voice of the Gen X era.

The group first came to prominence in 1991 with the single Smells Like Teen Spirit from the album Nevermind. Such was the massive popularity of the single it shot them right into the mainstream (something, ironically, Cobain wasn’t keen on), and the record is considered one of the main reasons for the massive rise in popularity of rock music throughout the 90s.

Nirvana would also go on to have major success with singles such as Lithium, Heart-Shaped Box and Come As You Are, along with UK #1 albums In Utero and MTV Unplugged In New York.

The success would sadly be short lived, as Cobain would take his own life in April 1994, aged just 27. The remaining members of the group decided to disband, and Dave Grohl would go on to form the Foo Fighters later that year.
