• Although most of us remember it from David Lynch's ill-fated big screen adaptation starring Kyle Maclachlan, Dune was originally a story by author Frank Herbert. The first novel remains one of the most celebrated works of science fiction ever committed to the page, winning the first ever Nebula Award for Best Novel.
• Following the tumultuous journey of young Paul Atreides, the story revolves around the mysterious planet Arrakis and the relationship between the spice and the terrifying sandworms that inhabit its surface. The multi-layered tale mixes elements of ecology, technology, politics and religion, as we follow Paul from soft outworlder to reluctant messiah of a tortured, downtrodden people.
• After its release in 1965, Dune went on to become the bestselling science fiction novel of all-time. Herbert's opus spawned five sequels, a series of board games, computer games, songs, and formed the basis for a Sci-Fi Channel TV miniseries in 2000 starring William Hurt and Susan Sarandon. The series continues to this day, under the stewardship of Herbert's son, Brian, and sci-fi writer Kevin J. Anderson.
