The King That Changed Everything

The King is Dead. Words no one wanted to hear, and certainly wasn’t expecting at just 42 years old. But that was exactly what happened on August 16th, 1977. 38 years have passed since arguably the greatest name in music history sadly left us – Elvis Presley.

Elvis is possibly the biggest influence to the evolution of music as we know it today. Not only being part of the Rock & Roll scene but finding success in blues, gospel and pop in general, he covered everything. We live in a modern world which features the likes of R&B, Rock, Pop, Urban and much more – in some way, shape or form – even if tedious, relates back to a style of music Elvis made famous back in the 50’s.

Beyond the music, is a further influence that Elvis played to the industry – he was the first big name to really use sex appeal to enhance his performances which, controversial at the time, certainly made the youth of the time excited. It was something new. No longer would musicians perform on stage and that would be it. Adding sexually provocative performances brought a new element of entertainment that would bring the revolution to what we have now.

Our friends at AnimalsYeahYeah have their own tribute design, “Elvis Purrsley”, which is available to purchase here.

There are two artists alongside Elvis who are considered to be the biggest influences for the music industry as we know it today – Michael Jackson and The Beatles – but would either of those have been who they were without Elvis? Possible, you could argue – But Elvis made Rock & Roll mainstream, and The Beatles took that rolling ball to take it to new heights. Elvis brought the new performance style, and Michael Jackson took it to new levels with unbelievable dance routines which we now see commonplace in music videos for all artists – the likes of Ne-Yo and Usher seemingly two examples.

At the end of the day – we provide a wide range of t-shirt designs that delve in to many aspects of music we love: Blur, Pink Floyd, Katy Perry, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers… the list goes on and on. Would any of these have been the artists we know today if not for Elvis? It’s unlikely.

We celebrate the trend-setter, the iconic, Elvis Presley.
